Max went to the lounge center ... he was short an away team partner. There had been some sort of red tape issue at corporate, and the batches of fresh meat for away teams had never arrived. Perhaps .... ah Jean. Wouldn't hurt having a genius on a mission.
"Hey buddy. How you doing? Having any traumatic shock issues from that firefight we had?"
He hoped not. Some people thrived ... some shut down ... some you couldn't tell.
--
A lot has happened since that first mission out, but I can't talk about it, IT won't let me. I tried getting caught, tried to communicate that sometime is wrong, but it stops me each time, takes over. I'm just glad my mind is my own for the most part. I look up at Maxwell from my modified ipad.
It's bad enough that I shot someone, I guess I should be grateful that I don't remember what happened much after the explosion. "Maxwell, are you going off world again?" The little freak in my head wants to go, maybe it'll slither out of me and go die in some desert.
-
He smiled. Good ... kid seemed okay.
"Yep, I don't know if you knew but we got a bunch of stargate addresses and are checking them out. I checked out one with the new girl, Caira ... and was quite the rush. Unfortunately, she's unavailable now. You're ... not up for a jaunt offworld are ya? Corporate put a hold on new recruits ((NPC ones anyway lol)) and I can't go alone."
He flipped a chair around, and sat down at the table.
--
I nod and look away a moment then smirk. "I'd love to join you Maxwell." I set the electronic device down. "Two man team isn't much of a team." I can hear Jean curse at me, but I can keep him under long enough. He is much too loud for my tastes.
--
He smiled.
"Actually, I'm used to working alone. Did I mention what I used to do. Agency stuff ... working my way into Taliban groups. I'm a fair linguist. A wasted skill now that we have the gate."
He gestured to the device.
"That something that can wait or is non top secret enough to bring along?"
--
I look at the electronic device and shrug. "It's just a toy." More like something Jean would never leave home without it. "This is a lot more dangerous than anything you have ever done before, Maxwell. Am I right?"
--
He shrugged.
"The stargate thing? For myself ... no. Death is death. One form or another. But the level of danger if we fail is immeasurably higher. We aren't dealing with a terrorist group or fringe country here. We're dealing with the entire galaxy. Perhaps more."
He smiled.
"It's our chance to put our personal stamps upon eternity. Or 'Alternity' is another way to phrase it. Everything we do can have a bufferfly effect throughout generations to come."
--
"I just like being able to do almost anything I want with my time." They never let Jean leave the base without an escort for fear he will be taken by some other organization, which makes my work all the more difficult. But going offworld is almost as good as being free. "When do we leave?"
--
He laughed.
"We can schedule an activation very soon. Say, you're a genius type, right? Diana said that advanced races like the Goa'ould can check the dialer devices and see what addresses have been dialed from them. Is there a way to ... I dunno ... WIPE the memory when we dial home? Maybe you could bring some tools with to check the dialer on this next world?"
