Danica had been home maybe an hour. It had been a promotion party for one of her friends and they had celebrated rather hard. The promotion had been long overdue. Everyone knew that and finally the department had recognized it.
She had never been much of a drinker and tonight she had made no exception. A glass of wine was all she would have. Even with the beers and mixed drinks being shoved at her, she had politely refused. Danica liked to keep a clear head at all times because she knew at any moment she could be called to duty.
Laying on her bed, she stared up at the ceiling and watched the fan move around at a slow pace. She had the day off, might as well enjoy it. Smiling to herself, she kicked off her high heels. Sitting up on the bed, she looked around the room for a brief moment. It was time for a shower.
Getting off her bed, Danica made her way towards the bathroom. Opening the door, she reached around the wall and flicked on the light switch. Just as she was going to unzip the back of her top she heard a loud crash below her window.
Turning, Danica moved towards the balcony sliding door and opened it. Stepping out onto the cement slab, she moved immediately towards the railing. Peering over, Danica looked down. It was not just one car that had collided with something, it was a pile up. This was going to get messy.
Running back into her bedroom, Danica grabbed the first pair of shoes she game across. Pulling on the tall, flat boots, Danica then went quickly to her dresser. Grabbing her gun belt and holster, she threw them on just as quickly as she had put on the boots. Picking up her badge, she hung it from her neck. Finally grabbing her leather jacket, she was out the door and almost flying down the 5 flights of stairs to the ground floor.
Pushing open the steel door, Danica stopped in her tracks on the sidewalk. She had figured there was going to be a lot of blood and guts, but she didn’t think she was going to be seeing what was before her. People were bent over other people and eating their flesh? What the hell?! The screams of people around her were almost deafening, only overshadowed by the sounds of cars crashing. It was almost like an apocalypse was breaking out.
Just as she was about to move forward, and hand grabbed her and swung her around. Danica came face to face with a bloodied person. Half their face was gone, the bones of the skull clearly visible underneath all the blood that was still oozing from the gnarled flesh. She pulled away, pushed the person back from her. Taking a step back, Danica watched as the person stepped forward again. Their mouth was open, arms extended out as they went for her again.
Pulling her gun out, Danica aimed her weapon at the person. “Stay back!” Her warning fell on deaf ears… or in this case ear, as the person moved forward. “I said stay back!” Again the person moved forward. Left with no choice, Danica fired her gun. She watched as the bullet went through the person’s dead, spewing chunks of brain and skull all over the wall behind them.
Danica was still in slight shock as she watched the person fall to the ground lifeless. Then gun shot seemed to have focused some unwanted attention on her. Looking up, she watched as a few more bloodied people started walking towards her. All with their mouths opened and arms raised towards her. “Not good…” She muttered.
Shooting two in the head, she missed the third one and then retreated back up the stairs towards her apartment. Making sure to lock the steel door behind her, Danica flew back up the stairs and to her room. Running literally on adrenaline, she made record time.
Shutting her front door and locking it, Danica moved to her closet. Grabbing her black duffel bag, she quickly began thrown in guns and ammo. Though she did not have much, it would was enough to insure her survival until she found someone else that wasn’t going to assault her.

That was two days ago. It was now going on day three. Sitting on the roof top, Danica looked out over what was left of the city. Her eyes were focused on the sunrise. The last time she watched a sunrise it had been a peaceful morning, the silence deafening but no less wonderful. Now the morning was plagued by moans of what she had decided were the walking dead. Grabbing her bag, Danica rested it on her shoulder. Time to begin another day of avoiding death. Somehow, living life as a police officer in NYC did not seem so bad anymore… to bad she could not go back to it.
