Kerina
Victor!!
*throw doors open* Where in Hades is that wretched husband of mine?!
Victor
"That echoing tone never does bring good tide...might she lend ear to my visiting the temples in tithing? ...Right I thought not." *Calls out* "Yes, oh sweetest of loves drawn from the nectars of the gods plucked from the trees of the yada yada...what do you disturb me for?"
Kerina
*hurl vase through door at him* Gods be! You bastard! *watches it shatter*
Victor
*Sets down his bundle of flamed hemp and removes his scroll of wars past from his lap* By the gods women, even Mercury is allowed a moment to rest his ass when his duties are finished."
Kerina
*storms over to Victor, draws her hand in motion to slap him.*
Victor
She lives yet! Now we have nearly half of the people who were due in tonight lol
It will have to be her bid for it, the gladiator has no says unless dictated
*Grabs his wifes hand and pulls her into his lap, the mellowing smokes bringing out a side often masked from the hard journeys* "Ah yes, she still has fire in her yet, one that would lead armies into battle under its heat"
Kerina
*struggles against Victor's grasp as he pulls her into his lap. Her eyes a flame with rage, focused right on his as she moves to bring her other hand up to make good with her previous attempt to strike.*
Victor
*Draws his face far from hers as he looks to Kerina, shaking the red from his cheek* "Madness woman! Do not think me above reddening your ass as you do my face! Out with it, speak of your invasive cause before my patience is lost!"
Kerina
*stays on Victor's lap, though her hand rest but on his shoulder after she watched him rub the reddness of his face. Her eyes were still lit a fire though she contemplated her words carefully. A small snarl almost escaping.
"As surprise it was, after all these years. Gods be it that your seed took root. I am with child." she gave a push at Victor's shoulder, obviously not pleased, but not of full hatred.
Victor
Eyes remain fixated with hers, returning fire. It was a mirror reflection, a reaction both of her striking and a return for the disdain she feeds towards him. It was as if Mars handed her a dagger to hold at his heart so that he could keep the warrior upon the battlefield. It was for this cause that he could find himself need of a life at home. Nay, it was the life of a war hero that would become a diplomat that would find lavished gifts and warm (hey dumas don't use this word) that wants rather than delivers for the duty of vow. Still though, despite kings and generals giving recollection of his feats and the women of noble birth that would lay at his feet to have granted to lay in his bed, absent his wife he longed for home and nothing would blind him of his family before his returning. If was as each passage home that for first greeting, he felt her warmth once more, her relief for his return. He knew this was a like cause of her being reassured her fortune and position were well preserved, but for a night between many months, he could allow the wandering mind of his youth to cease control and paint a picture no artisan finds ability, even through almighty Muse.
For all of his murderous outbursts, never did he find hate with the woman. Outrage, often, but this would be a manifestation of a life lived upon foreign soil, finding the purest of hatred in men who knew nothing more than that they had been told of his evil, while he tells his own men of the evil of the commander who sides the equal perch across the plain. Never though, could he bring himself to the distant mindset of his own self, the counterpart in armor, never in regain to her else his rage would have ended her already.
His eyes did not soften for a long moment, transfixed upon hers in a cascade of mental trickery he had known not before. The words had long since echoed past his ear, yet he remained as stone. His mighty calloused hand, possessing yet that dainty yet deft and cunning instrument of things of ascension and atrocities both; his fingers slide down the slender wrist to interlock fingers with hers. The grip gentle as if he was yet a fledging within the ranks, fearing the effects of reverberation from the practice with an unstained sword.
At least eyes soften, then lips, never moving from under her. Water glosses over the brown so used to reflecting armor and muck, but now soaring beyond any challenge he has yet faced. His open hand drifts upwards, caressing the hair of the woman he fears so often has forgotten him before lips press to hers, holding her still by the hair for a long moment before tilting his chin backwards.
"A child! At last! Gods be blessed, and may they return blessing with an heir! This is cause for the greatest of celebrations! Nay, not a celebration of the city, that brings ill omen towards our house, but a celebration within this home, for we as the House of Vitella, and for the youth that follows!"
Kerina
It was to be a match not even two gods would win. A match of emotionless staring between the two. Her deep orbs lingered on Victor's. She hadn't forgotten the passion the two could share. It had been long since it had been an innocence between them. At one time, she even loved him. Maybe she still did. Her life without him would cease to exist, in many ways she needed him. His long years at war had left her feeling cold, lonely, cast aside. It only be fitting that in the end she'd found the warmth of one of Victor's own.
But now, this, it cast things in a different level all together. Only when Victor's glare softened did her eyes draw from his to her hand, watching as his rough powerful fingers intertwined with her own. Such a simple act of affection, one she'd not felt in years. Genuine affection, for something she'd had little choice in.
Her eyes, so deep, so full of discontent closed, least it be seen she shared the same lingering affection for Victor as he kissed her. Her lips moistened against his before she found the moment had passed, his head drew back and as her eyes opened she saw the look of happiness in Victor's eyes.
For so long had they tried, only to be blessed. The only problem, and she dare not speak word of it, was she wasn't even sure it was Victor's child. She coiled her arms around his neck, hugging him as she rest her lips against his forehead and placed kiss there and drew back, sliding from his lap, his grasp, his very warmth least true feelings of her own be shown.
"They do indeed bless us Victor." she replied to him, her hand drew his to her stomach, letting his palm rest over her warm flesh separated by thin silken layer.
"I shall have Lissanna prepare for great feast then, husband."
Lissanna
Oh how nervous she grew when the Dom came home. Her Mistress was not herself when Victor came back. She was frighteningly present when he wasn't there... but having the both of them there was downright awe inspiring. At least to her.
And what was she to do, but watch helplessly as they seemed ready to battle? The Domina Kerina upon Victor's lap, the red on his cheek and the fury in his eyes made her mouth go dry in conflicting desire. Did she rush to take a strike for her Mistress? Or did she remain still, as was her place?
Perhaps it was best that she took too long to decide, considering the news that the mistress gave in that quiet moment. Her head tilted down, a smile of relief upon her features. A baby? A baby might calm things a little. Make the Master more in control of his volatile temper and the Mistress less likely to cause trouble... such would be all she could hope for right now.
"As you wish, My Domina." She bowed, her hands folding over her chest. "Was there any particular taste you preferred for the feast this day?" She didn't ask what flavor of wine. Such a feast would have it, of course, but not in such quantities as the nights before. It was to be a celebration, not a drunken revelry. At least, not according to tradition.
Gods save her, they both confused her at times.
Let it be something uncomplicated... something traditional. I know the traditional... but if they get complicated, I might be beaten for failing to know... She bit her lip, keeping her head down. It wasn't that she was frightened of beatings... she was frightened of what would happen if she was set to the side.
All slaves knew those horror stories... and she'd no desire to join that sordid legend.
Anori
Anori's eyes opened as the new day came. She had spent many long hours that night with her husband to be. Just recently negotiated, it appeared the two young lovers could hardly wait to enjoy themselves. She stirred, her fingers slowly trailed along Lucius chest as she leaned down, giving a bite to the center of his chest and a small chuckle as she stirred him awake.
"The gods are with me today, you didn't disappear a spectre of dream." she replied, her fingers slowly moved up along the edge of his neck up to his jaw.
"Did the gods bless you with pleasant dreams?" she asked him, looking to those deep eyes of his.
Victor
"Nay woman, no great feast. Bacchus was invited in weeks prior, but we find calmer house. We invite Vesta, for we shall need it when my personal Venus brings about our son"
As he strikes the word Venus, Victor draws more near and pulls Kerina in as well, resting her cheek softly against his.
"Instead of a single great feast, I think it fitting to find two of the lesser. One of course inviting dearest friends and those we wish to be friends to our table. We shall anoint them with the finest of delicacies and offer up sacrifice for the gods together to bless our child. I cannot combine the feast I wish for the next night..."
Victor slides his hands up Kerina's arms, resting easily on her shoulders and parting enough to look at her, then to Lissanna.
"Slave, I leave in your charge a matter that never one of your position has seen before. You shall prepare first that noble feast, and then for two days removed another. The feast that follows will see no formal cloth and no maneuvers for favor. In true blessings of Vesta, we shall have a feast truly of the Vitella House. Guards, Slaves and Gladiators, we shall all break bread as one."
Victor pauses for a moment, lips curling upwards before looking back to his wife. He was a man who so seldom made personal request and even less so asked of any permission. If task needed done, never would his lips break pride to make begging of a higher position, and if the request was of lower position, it became demand. His voice still carried with it a softness, an overabundance of joy still resonating about his aura from the words that may have been whispered by Minerva himself.
"With your word, of course, my love. She is after all your bodyslave. I dare not place burden upon her shoulders should her removal become burden upon you."
Lucius
The morning sun broke through the veil of Anori's bedroom that single ray of sunshine shone on her bed, it was
something out of a dream. But it wasn't a dream. He was in a full restful sleep when she roused him from his
slumber.
He slowly opened his eyes and as they focused the first thing he saw was Anori and he smiled as he could feel
sleep's veil lifting from him. "The gods are good to you indeed my love" he said as he slowly sat up a bit.
"They blessed you with unmatched beauty and such a kind heart" he smiled as he kissed her softly. His life
had never felt more complete than he did now. He had successfully negociated with her father, He loved her with
all his heart and soul and had for such a long time. "The gods also blessed me with very restful slumber" his
eyes locked on hers, and in those eyes he could see their unborn children, in those eyes he could see a lifetime
of blissful happiness. In those eyes he saw, the missing part of his soul
He rested on his elbows his eyes locked on hers "What shall we do today my Love?" they had alot of preperations
for the upcoming wedding, he would go all out, for her he would spare no expense. For her he would do everything
in his power to make her and keep her as happy as she made him.
Kerina
Kerina's eyes lingered on Victor as he rose to her, placing hand upon her arms and holding her close. If it weren't a bit..rare.. she might have enjoyed it. Instead it seemed more unnatural a thing for her to be held by her husband. Yet she wished not to spoil such a fine time for Victor, it was rare she genuinely saw him happy, if he was happy, he wasn't making things more difficult for her.
She rest her fingers on the front of his body, a trail of fingertip against his battle worn skin exposed before she looked back up to his eyes but for moment before she turned gaze to Lissanna.
"Do as your Dominus commands. I see no need to alter his vision, it is a celebration of the Vitella, and he is Master of it." Kerina replied, her eyes looked back to Victor, a soft touch of her fingers up and to his jaw as she made request.
"I wish to make offering to Natio, goddess of birth for our child. I will need guard while you oversee things prepared here, would you allow guard to accompany me?" she questioned.
Lissanna
Her lips parted in surprise a moment, but she quickly hid that expression. She was a bright girl... she was certain she could find some way of ensuring the feast was a success.
Her hands locked in front of her, head remaining bowed as she listened. As she waited, she felt her thoughts racing. The first feast would be a nightmare for her heart. There would be guests, of course. And likely important ones. The birth of the first child was always extravagant in noble homes, or so she'd been instructed.
If they were to have a feast befitting of Vesta, then it would certainly need to be of a calmer tone.
Of course, her thoughts were interrupted as she heard him ASKING the Mistress about her availability. ASKING. Not demanding.
And it shocked her to her core. THe Master did not ask. He demanded. And her heart soared at the knowledge that in this, he was a caring man. Not gentle at all, her Master... he was a bit of a brute. A little clumsy with social etiquette... but protective and ... She quickly lowered her eyes.
Best not to let him see the wonder in her expression. She didn't want to ruin it. "As my Dominus and Domina command, so shall I be. If I may..." She lifted her head, keeping a calm expression on her face. "The other servants of the house will be quite busy in these preparations. Are there any that you do not wish to fall under the aegis of the preparations?"
Anori
Anori looked upon Lucius with softened eyes, she lay with him, half covered amongst the bed, resting half atop him, sharing the warmth of his body during the morning day. It was but a moment when she tilted her head and kissed him, letting her enjoyment of him be known than the moment passed with a sudden opening of her bedroom door. Her Father.
She gave small gasp as she toppled aside Lucius and looked over to the old Senator.
"Mgh. Lucius.. I seek moment of your ear once dressed." he replied before turning without further word and leaving his daughter and his son to be alone.
Anori's eyes were widened, it was almost like being caught being bad, but not, afterall, it had been approved by her father, she chuckled and nuzzled into Lucius jaw and looked to his eyes. " Well. I guess you're going to meet with my father." she joked, leaning her head and giving playful bite to his side.
Lucius
He looked at Anori after her father came in and left. He satup fully and got dressed, He would have liked to
have stayed in bed a bit longer he took his sword that still laid on the table he put the belt that it hung on
around his waist. He went over to the water basin and splashed water on his face and then looking at Anori he
walked over to her and leaned over the bed and kissed her
"I love you" he whispered as he kissed her a second time and he let it linger, as it all still felt like a dream
and when the kiss broke, he walked out of her room and in search of his future father in law. Though the man had
always been like a father figure to him in his youth. He attributed alot of his success to his wisdom. They still
had much to discuss and he figured he wanted to do it now
Victor
Victor, try as he might, could not cease his smile. Before allowing her to rise, he pulled him wife in once more, embracing her lips with his own. The press found his skin warmer to the touch, his blood quickened and his chest in a tempo of more frequency. When at last he guides Kerina to her feet, a long slow breath escapes him, nearly a sigh.
"I shall prepare here what need be done, have no worries of the matter. I shall send my best guard with you for protection...Invictus would no doubt be training those guards not on watch in the courtyard, you may remove him from post on your way through the gates."
Hands quickly rolling up his scroll of war, he places it back within its pigeon-hole and instead draws a box of inks, a ledger, and a blank scroll from the desk before stopping Kerina at the door of his study.
"Kerina...one request. Tell my captain you wish blessings for a dearest friend. He has served well under me for a decade, and continues to stand trustworthy that my house might further ascend even when I am forced abroad. No doubt his hardships will lessen with me stable within this nation to supervise my own house and no doubt his will be overwhelmed with joy as I am when he hears news. I would wish that I can share word with him from my own breath.
"Lissanne...while she fetches the captain, set about your work and send my aid to the courtyard. Have him dictate duties for the others to prepare and gather when is needed for the offering. See to it that Kerina has every wish met and that her offering is one perceived as favorable by the gods. The bulk of the preparations can wait until she has no further need of you for the day. Now go, the both of you!"
Urgently he ushers both women from the room, his hand guiding over the waist of his wife. Victor watches them depart, eyes un-removed from Kerina until she has vanished from view. Only then can he make way for the courtyard to further prepare on his own right.
Kerina
Kerina played the rouse, letting her finger brush along Victor's jaw as he kissed her, and then bid her leave with but one request. She not tell Invictus. She nodded, a questioning look in her eyes before she commented, " Very well Victor, I shall not speak word of it." she lied.
She looked to Lissanna as she moved from the room, leaving Victor to his proceedings before she took hold of the slave girl and drew her to the side, looking to her eyes. "You must keep Victor appeased while I am gone. I have never left you here by yourself with him. Obey his orders and stay clear of him least he sell you from beneath me." Kerina replied, looking to the girl's eyes as she held hushed moment with her.
"When I return I will educate you on what to prepare for the upcoming feast, the one for Victor's family will be most important, least we offend his blood." Kerina replied. What was this? A bit of concern, worry upon Kerina's eyes, of Victor's family no less. Indeed.
She calmed after a moment before moving to find Invictus in the courtyard, a gathering of fresh offerings along the way as she approached him. With Victor not near, her eyes softened as she focused on the imposing figure training the others.
"Captain." she spoke clearly, least her words be heard. Awaiting him to come to her she would further speak, "I require your escort to the temple to make offering." she replied, her eyes lingering on those deep blue orbs.
Lissanna
Her mouth was dry as she listened to her Mistress speak. Stay clear of Victor in his own household while also not sure of what to prepare? She bowed her head, her eyes lowering. "Of course, Domina." She bowed, taking a deep breath.
"I shall see to your luncheon to ensure its completion for your return. Was there anything you would prefer, Domina? Your usual tea, perhaps?" She lifted her eyes, letting her adoration appear on her face for a moment. She wasn't completely sure as to why the Domina had chosen her at the market... but she was eternally grateful.
For the Domina, she would slice her own throat if it was necessary. For the Domina, she would even risk Victor's displeasure.
She supposed the easiest way to avoid Victor would be to ensure the Domina's food was prepared... and then see to the Domina's room. With such important news, the Dominus was most likely to remain within his study, or speaking to the guards about their duties.
Should she remain within the kitchens, and preparing the servants for the upcoming workloads... yes, that might indeed do the trick.
Anori
Anori smiled to Lucius as he dressed and came to kiss her. She returned his affectionate embrace before she cast soft brush of her fingers along his arm and nodded.
"May the gods bless you today dear husband to be." she smiled, looking up to his eyes before letting him go and preparing to dress as well.
The old Senator was settled at table of breakfast prepared, taking time to eat fruit with his shaky hands and take drink of wine as Lucius approached.
"Lucius, my boy, have seat." he bid him comply.
"I gave much thought to your future after our discussion last night." he confessed.
"We senators grow old with time my boy. I am an old man, and yet there are some even older that remain." he replied, biting into more fruit.
"One of my fellow Senators retires soon. Leaving a vacant position. I have decided to back you for such, least a Vitellius snatch it up once more." he replied, coughing slightly before taking a drink.
Invictus
It seemed to be a contest of two swords; that of the courtyard and that of the pit of the ludus. The echo rang from below, only to be returned from above in the courtyard where Invictus ran the men not on duty through drill. It was tiring, and Invictus was twice as exhausted. He had awoken to train with the first shift, allowed them to rest while he trained with the gladiators, then returned to instruct further drills. His body never slouched during the harsh routine, he willed it not to.
Still, he was relieved at the interruption. He felt inappropriate standing before the Domina without chestpiece or shirt, having tied a kilt in the style of the celt he had trained with earlier in the day instead of wearing proper Roman attire. Standing at attention, his eyes fight to lock upon her figure and avert from it. He nods slowly at her words and begins to speak before a servant runs up, attempting to cleanse him with damp cloth in presentation of Kerina.
"Yes Domina, at your every bidding.... Boy! Cease that! as inappropriate as I stand before the Domina, you attempting to rectify the situation only furthers insult! ...I apologize Domina, I shall get cleaned up at once to escort you."
Invictus bows and steps back, gathering his gear and rushing off, leaving the guards to slow their training before finally halting. Invictus returns in full uniform, drawing his sword and pointing it at one of the guards standing duty at the gate.
"You! See to it these dogs continue to pant and not bark, they are not finished with their exercise yet. Else I will see to it that their coin goes to the gladiators instead."
The guards grumble for a moment then snap to attention at the realization that Invictus yet stands present. They return to training before Invictus returns his bow to Kerina.
"Domina."
The bow is cut short by the shuffling of feet over marble and then grass, Invictus turning head to see an overburdened slavegirl rushing with goods of sacrifice, clear that her balance would be lost with her load. Invictus quickly steps forward, catching the slavegirl as the load begins to topple and pressing her upon her feet once more.
Lucius
Lucius found him feasting at the breakfast table, and didnt think twice when he bade him to sit, He obeyed as the
servants brought forth fresh fruit and cheeses to his plate, and poured him a cup of wine. Lucius took a sip of
wine as he listened to his future father in law.
He took another sip of wine before he would reply to his offer as it was a one of a kind offer. "I would be honored"
he began "I know that Anori would not want me in the heat of battle, and I feel like I can bring my experience to
the senate" He shook his head as he took another sip "I accept" he took satisfaction in how his life was pieceing
together, the campaign was over and coming home he has secured himself not only a bride but the woman he spent much
of his life working to prove his worth for. And now His political career might be born and soon a Wedding. Yes Lucius
was very happy with his life.
Kerina
Kerina glimpsed over Invictus as he stood before her, much as she envisioned a warrior would after the heat of battle. It was true, far from war, in the safety of the Capital she was, and the closest to battle she would ever get, aside from the physical alterations between she and Victor was to watch the games. Invictus was quite the handsome man, it was no wonder Kerina held attraction to him. She of course, let her eyes linger but only moment before she looked to the servant who moved to cleanse Invictus. She let her lips curled to a slightly humored smirk. Afterall, she'd often found Invictus even more appealing as he was.
"Of course Captain. I shall await your return." she commented, letting him move off without further word as she gathered her things, including a drapery for her head, awaiting to see if Lissanna would return to her or not.
Soon enough Invictus returned in his full uniform, how soldierly he appeared, it reminded her perhaps of times in past when Victor was but a soldier and not the diplomat he had become in recent years.
Her eyes lingered on Invictus as he greeted her before she nodded her own, "Captain." she commented, catching but mere glimpse of the slave girl as she almost toppled over with the load she carry.
She took deep breath, motioning for one of the guards, " Go find Lissanna, her accompaniment will be necessary this trip afterall."
Lissanna
She was panting her thanks as Invictus rescued her from dropping things... which would have been mortifying. She cleared her throat, before looking towards the Domina's feet around her pile of offerings.
"Domina... I have had the kitchen staff prepare your luncheon for your return. I have also brought everything needed for your visit to the temple." She lowered her eyes, blushing. She knew quite well how handsome Invictus was. She also knew not to look for more than a moment.
"I shall not slip again, My Lady." So embarrassing. So very, very embarrassing. But at least she was out of hte household, safe from Victor. For the moment, at any rate.
Silence, Lissanna... babbling will be your undoing. Keep calm. Keep your face calm. The Domina is taking care of you, for some reason, so don't screw it up.
Anori
"Do not thank me yet my boy. This in no way assures you the soon vacant spot. The Vitella are a powerful family, you must look to gain foothold over them. Rumor has it that Victor looks to hold Senate himself." the old Marcus replied.
"I will do everything in my ability to speak up my new son in law however. " he chuckled, leaning and giving Lucius a harder pat on the shoulder.
"I know my daughter well, I know she would be displeased if you went back to war. My fault I suppose, those many years of my own serving, she never was happy when I left each time." he grunted slightly, " Women."
Invictus
Pausing a moment in his quarters, he checks his pulse and flexes muscle groups independently. Not of vanity, for he was raised to have humility to encase his strength and power, but rather of practice of good health. If was often that while adrenaline yet consumes the body, it would be easy to ignore a sprain or pulled muscle. While he was but a guard, and never a legionnaire himself due the weakness of the ears and a blurred vision of distance; he was still trained as one by his father.
It was to no miss on his part that he had taken notice of his heart's beating as he stood before the Domina. The thoughts that consumed him would see him flogged if lucky. Should whispers of what thoughts had followed to ever reach Dominus' ears, he would not be the first to have footsteps end where trail continues.
Invictus hurries to rinse his body and properly clad himself before jogging back to the courtyard where Kerina yet waits. After the fall, he takes the burden of the girl for his own shoulder and looks to the slavegirl.
"Domina, I think that my search for your girl will be quick, for she stands before you. Silly girl, this is far more than is needed for a simple sacrifice, but you seek only to better your Master and our fair Domina, no fault or folly in your wishing of wellness. Tollius, the gate!"
Invictus snaps back forward, load unon his shoulder as the gates open. Invictus pauses, waiting for Kerina to step first before following steps behind her in respect, though this gap would be closed once they reach dangerous city streets, to no mind of either."
"Might I ask, Domina, to whom do we step to pay homage to?"
Lucius
He nodded he knew it was not guarenteed he sipped his wine and looking at Marcus "Your faith in me drives me
to bring nothing but honor to our family but whether I serve in the Senate or in another fashion I will give it
my all" he took a slice of cheese and ate it
"Well to be honest, she inspired my career, I had to be the best so I could prove my worth of being worthy of
your daughter"
Kerina
Kerina's eyes took second glimpse upon the slave girl next to her, a small chuckle to escape her lips as she shook her head slightly, " Lissanna, I hardly recognized you beneath all of that." she humored.
"Invictus is correct, however, bring only half of it." she replied, tilting her head back, it would be enough that the two of them could split it and it wouldn't be of major weight for either to carry.
She proceeded out onto the streets with Invictus and Lissanna. Fortunately people did know whom she was, and they knew of Victor, one would not dare risk Victor's anger by touching his wife.
All save one, the one whom was but a pace behind her.
Her head tilted towads Invictus as he asked whom they patroned today.
There was but a silence as she let word slip but of whom.
"The goddess Natio."
Lissanna
She kept her face calm. Not a flicker of surprise, or worry. She had been there when Victor had made mention to not tell Invictus... and she knew the Domina had just broken the rule, though perhaps not overtly.
Not a word of it would slip her lips either. Should she be questioned, she could answer calmly that the Mistress had said no such thing.
Perhaps this was why the Domina had chosen her. Her ability to keep a calm face, if nothing else. True, she could show nervousness in the way her body was held... but as she was always nervous around the Dominus, that would mean nothing.
So instead of speaking, she simply carried her load, grateful for the assistance that the Captain had given in taking some of the weight. And even more grateful that the Domina had decided on only half of what she'd originally taken.
Better to take too much, than too little. A baby to care for... that would be a grand thing. A little smile at that thought relaxed her a bit more. A baby of the Domina... a blessed creature that would be.
Anori
Marcus chuckled some. "Indeed my boy, you are the best. I suppose it only fitting that I seek to further your future as I have no son of my own." he replied, finishing his meal and standing after moment.
"Look good to your path and future Lucius, I have looked after you since you were a young lad, your parents were dear friends of mine, and they would be pleased to see you as you are now." he stated as a matter of factly.
"But enough ramblings of an old man I must make way to the Senate least wolves think me too slow and pick me off from the herd." he chuckled as he headed off.
Lucius
He rose as Marcus rose and watched him go "May the gods smile favorably upon you father"
After he left, he finished his meal and went looking for Anori, starting with her room where he had left her
how he ached and yearned for her, he had much he wanted to tell her, he had much he wanted to do. So many
arrangements to be made but all he wanted at that very moment was Anori, He opened the door to her room
"My Love?" He called to her looking for her
Invictus
Invictus nods and splits the load in 3 parts, splitting the load into half, then half again. He leaves behind what is directed then secures the load beneath one of Lissanna's arms so that one can be free.
"Support the burden with your free hand but leave it free. Should I have cause to draw blade I rely on your swiftness to not taint the sacrifice, for I shall have to abandon it in my protection of Domina."
Securing the other half beneath his left arm, he places his right hand upon his belt near the blade. He dares not to hold upon the hilt and issue challenge to those that would be upon the stones, with with the load, neither would he be unprepared should action be called upon. Invictus followed upon the road, waiting until they reach crowds before stepping in front of Kerina, paving way to that others might not brush against her.
Invictus notices a long pause following his inquiry but thinks little of it as his eyes search the crowd. Having low ability to see distance meant that he must search those nearby 3 times as often as other men, but he held his duty well in spite. By time the crowds thin through a lesser traveled, much narrower passage he nearly forgets the question until he hears her lips part and words spoken. His sandals halt in the street.
Kerina
Kerina minded not the girl knowing of certain things, she was sworn to secrecy. Least she feel the wrath of her Domina one last time before life pass from body at the hands of Victor.
Kerina watched as Invictus moved ahead of her, she said nothing further than she had before she stumbled almost directly into the man no more than several steps from the temple itself. She swallowed slightly, her breathing a bit more rapid as she glimpsed towards Lissanna, she almost wanted to hide behind the slave.
Instead she, ever the bold one, placed hand upon Invictus back and bid him foot to travel.
"Come. Into the temple with me. Both of you." she commanded, stepping past Invictus and to the temple, the sanctuary was a small one, private, it held a door behind to be closed until the more wealthy finished their prayers. A few Denarii to the priest would ensure such anyway.
Once the three were within, the door closed, she looked to Lissanna. "Prepare the offerings for the goddess." she instructed, her eyes then turned to Invictus, afraid to see the look on his own face as she stepped close, far closer than Domina and servant should be.
"I discovered only today."
Anori
Anori heard Lucius call, a small grin slowly rose upon her face as she glimpsed towards the door from the heated bathing pool which she sat within, lightly moistening her skin with the warm waters.
"In here Lucius." she smiled more broadly, calling from the bathing chamber.
Lissanna
She jerked as she felt the Captain stop... but it was a small one. She made the pause seem apurpose, her eyes locked on the road. As if such a pause were meant to happen, and her being a good slave would wait for a signal to start up again.
I am not here. I am not noticing this conversation.
She had a great desire to speak quietly to the Captain and remind him that pausing in the middle of the street was not a wise idea... but she had seen him fight, and she knew the Domina's temper. Unless they gathered too much attention, she would say nothing.
Not yet. Fortunately, the Domina was a good Mistress, and moved them right along. "Of course, Domina." She quietly took the load from Invictus, well aware of the undercurrent between the two.
Slave she may be, stupid she was not.
So she unpacked the offerings, carefully organizing them as she had been instructed. She was quite nervous about this... but at least she knew how to do offerings properly.
Invictus
Boots are slow over the stones, their unyielding form seeming to transmit through his sandals. Legs seem heavy as pillar before pillar they carry him through to the temple door. His open hand pulling the handle towards him, he stands at attention to allow Kerina access, his gaze far above her face.
He follows after the slave and places the half of offering he carries before the altar before placing his back to pillar, body sinking low into a squat. Invictus says not a word, not moves his eyes upwards.
Before, he held fears of words from a slave, or even a guard beneath him prying for position. Now, his fears had turned from a legend of the gods into a brutal warhero, swinging an ax with fury of a thousand lions. His mind rang...the temple was not there, nor the priests who made exit for the Domina's privacy, nor the slave girl, and certainly not the Domina herself. As Domina's simple words moves towards him, he took condemned man's pose, lacing his fingers over the top of his head, arms to either side of his face.
Kerina
Kerina's eyes sank with Invictus as did her heart as he squatted to the floor, looking as if the gods themselves were standing upon his shoulders. Her trip to the temple had been but a rouse, an excuse to get Invictus by herself, away from the villa. She sank down to her knees right before him, looking to him as he appeared to look helpless. He was far from, but it disturbed her greatly to see him in such a position.
She brought her hand up, brushing her fingers along his cheek, cupping it as she gazed to his eyes with deep affection and but a whisper.
"Invictus.. before we left I told Victor I was with child. He believes it to be his, but in my heart I know and pray it is yours." she spoke, not exactly hiding her conversation from Lissanna but not exactly shouting it either.
Lissanna
Her hands stilled for a moment as she heard her Domina speak aloud what she had suspected... but not quite wanted to believe. It was not that she begrudged her Mistress affection... having met the Dominus, she applauded the Mistress in truth.
But if the child was of the captain's get... and if the child did not resemble Kerina closely enough...
She swallowed, her eyes closing as she set the offering in place.
Gods show mercy and let the child match the Dominus in some way, I beg. If I had anything of my own to offer, I would do so.
She brushed her hair off her shoulder, before standing and bowing to Kerina and the Captain. "Domina, the offering has been prepared and is ready for your service." She touched her hand to her heart, her eyes locking on the Domina's face. "Is there anything else you would wish for such an offering, my Domina?" She touched her lips, as if motioning silence.
Her own quiet oath of loyalty, so to speak. She was the Domina's... and only by proxy did Victor have any sway over her. Loyalty, however, was to Kerina alone.
Invictus
"Victor would bury us both..."
Invictus reaches forward, placing his hand upon Kerina's waist, raising his eyes to hers. A mix of love and fear lay in his eyes. Invictus knew he was no match against Victor. No guards would stand at his back. If they did not come to their Dominus' defense properly, all would be condemned for conspiracy. No fair trial could be hoped with between social rankings. Even if they all abandoned cause out of loyalty to Invictus, should he stand square against the man; Victor was one of the greatest war heroes of the day. Beyond that, he watched Invictus train daily. Victor knew each of his moves, corrected a few of them. Live battles were no match for a guardman's training.
"Kerina...my love for you draws deeper than roots of the oldest tree of Rome. So many nights I have prayed to forget, but the gods will it to be so. This is perhaps a sign...one that the gods wish for the tyranny of the household to end, for you to be free. To be happy."
Words fell silent to those whispers of the slave girl, reminding Invictus of another presence. His hand departs Kerina's side as his knees snap straight, rising him to attention before walking to Lissanna. He places thumb and finger to her chin, bringing her head up and forcing him to look upon him.
"Words slave girl...you see what the Master is like. Give words on what you would see done if you had will of your own."
Kerina
Kerina had never gotten on her knees for Victor as she was before Invictus. If ever there was a question of her love for the man before her, one had to simply look at her now. She tilted her head slightly as Invictus took touch of her, his fingers on her sides. Her own gently moved up, resting on each of Invictus' biceps as he spoke his love for her. It created a genuine sparkle in her eyes.
"The gods bless me with child I believe is yours Invictus. A symbol of my love for you." she whispered, her hand took his, guiding his fingers across her stomach, keeping her hand with his.
"We are all slave of Vitella, me most of all, married to a man I do not love, Domina of one I do, forbidden to have within me what I cherish so." Kerina spoke truth.
Her words trailed off as Invictus rose, moving to Lissanna, she lingered for a moment before listening to the words being spoke of the two. Her eyes watched as the man she loved, and the slave she most trusted moved to conspire.
Lissanna
She raised her eyes, studied Invictus' face. "I owe the Domina my life. Should she ask me to plant dagger in a heart, I would do so." She did not flinch. She did not breathe.
Invictus was wonderful. Fearful, and yet gentle. She could choose no better for her Domina. "The Domina holds my loyalty, no other." At the same time, she was careful to name no names. To say nothing of Victor himself.
Slave she was... stupid she was not.
Her eyes finally turned, landing on Kerina. And then she lowered them, watching her Domina's feet. She would do anything for the Domina. So many could have left her in that market. Pretty, they had said. But no training. Sold into slavery to get her family out of debt, she had nothing save looks to fall on, and the basic training of the marketplace. She could have died... she could have been sold into a Brothel. So many horrid fates could have happened.
Kerina had taken her in. Kerina was training her. Kerina gave her purpose, and clothing, and food. "I would never speak a word of sensitive issues, and never allude to anything, that the Mistress wishes to be kept silent. If she were to order me to remove my tongue, I would give you the dagger to do so."
Her eyes finally lifted, watching Invictus' face yet again. "My loyalty is to the Domina. Always. No one else."
Invictus
He turned away from the both of them, deep in thought and silence a moment, pacing his steps. His mind was sharp, calculating. If he had better eyes to see field, he would be a general. If he had better blood, a senator. As it were, he took a position over veterans of many wars within the house. Finally his pacing stopped as he returned to the floor with Kerina, gently cupping her face with his hand but turning towards the slave.
"Dedicated, but foolish girl. If you tried to raise dagger, one of my men would put a stop to it. Yourself and else of your fellow slaves would be executed. Likewise, if I did, my guards would perish with me, and all the slaves as well. There is poison and other accidental death, but if my child does not survive birth, may the gods forbid such an action, or should the gods choose to bless me with daughter...my beloved would be forced to marry another without heir."
Turning towards Kerina, he brushes his lips to her forehead, pulling her then to his chest and holding her against him.
"Even in the best of occurrences, even with the man who holds love for me as a brother, should he to die and there be an heir. He would not be deemed my heir, and never would we be permitted to marry."
Kerina
Kerina's eyes closed as Invictus kissed her forehead. She drew in deep breath and exhaled. Her fingers grasped Invictus as if she were fearful he would leave. She tilted her head, looking up to his deep blue eyes and rest her forehead against his, her voice clear enough for them both to understand.
"We will speak of this no more. I love you Invictus, but I will not trade life for life. Victor's for that of our child." Kerina replied, a tear moistened her cheek as she thought of killing Victor. Never in all the times she had yelled, screamed, or been physical with Victor had she ever wanted to kill him now.
Kerina slowly drew grasp from Invictus as she turned to Lissanna, taking one hand on her shoulder and bringing the other up to her cheek in but soft brush of the back of her hand.
"Your loyalty honors me. But I beg of you, never speak word of this to anyone, even those you hold closest to you. "
Kerina's eyes left the girls and looked back to Invictus as she took the prepared offering and placed it upon the altar and then stepped back, extending her hand, one to each of them, hand clasping with Lissanna, and fingers intertwining with Invictus', beckoning them to join her for the prayer of the goddess.
Lissanna
"As you wish, my Domina." Lissanna pressed her lips shut, taking a few deep breaths. She had no one, other than the Domina. So why would she speak of it?
In truth, she was too new to the household to have made any friends. And companionship? Oh no. The other house slaves were watching, checking to see how long she lasted. Checking to see if she could manage longer than the last slave that the Domina had kept.
Gods, Lissanna hoped so. She prayed so. But at this moment... she prayed for the baby taht her Domina carried. Her words were not yet a lie... but when the baby was born, she would be loyal to the baby as well. For it was the Domina's baby. Not Victor's, and not Invictus. Just Kerina's.
Invictus
Eyes search for Kerina's, listening to her tone. He nods. In truth, there was only one way. Eventually, they were run. He knew now, but could not speak word. Kerina must have the child first and regain health. Then they would have some time before the baby grew enough to look like he. After all, both he and Victor were of Roamn blood. Both dark haired and sharp feature. Nothing that would hide the child as a boy or girl, but as an infant, they had time to bid.
He lowered his head, feeling the fool. Yes, this would become their new life...eventually. Even if he had to take his beloved in her sleep. He knew she loved power, but she would forgive him and be happy with their new life together, they would have to be. At least a year's time away.
"Yes Domina. We may wish to prepare offering for our child soon...I do not wish to keep Dominus waiting on his own for too great a time, I fear ability to answer his inquisition."
Kerina
After the prayer was spoken she turned to Invictus. She released hand of Lissanna and wrapped her arms around him, bringing her lips to his to kiss him, something she'd longed to do ever since Victor had returned. It was a deep lock, one of passion, need, love.
She held onto him as she tilted her head, savoring the moment with the soldier who'd captured her heart and further claimed her his with a child.
She drew her lips back slowly, looking to his eyes as she whispered, " You must give false knowledge to any of this. Victor wishes to tell you himself. " her fingers brushed his scruffy cheek and jaw.
"He gave instructions that if you asked that I was to tell you the blessings were for friend." she informed him. She knew they didn't have long, but even a moment to feel Invictus arms around her, his body against hers, and to taste his lips, such a moment could last an eternity.
In the end, her arms drew her back, she bowed her head and looked to Lissanna, "Come. It is time we return."
Lissanna
She inclined her head, before picking up the Domina's wrap and carefully wrapping laying it over her shoulders. "The wind is picking up, my Domina. Please, keep warm." She smiled, a little shyly, but kept her eyes down. No one would think it odd for a bodyslave to worry over their master's health. Not even in public.
Especially over a pregnant Domina.
She risked a glance at Invictus, shut her eyes... and then regained control of her breath. Her shoulders. Her chin went up, her stance that of a slave who knew her place. And she did. At the Domina's side, taking care of her.
"Your luncheon should be ready upon our return. I had the kitchen instructed to prepare a relaxing tea, as well as your favorite bread and fruit. There will be warm soup as well. Shall I have a serving made for the Captain upon our arrival, Domina?"
Invictus
Invictus holds her tight, keeping her wrapped tight in his arms, wishing Victor gone that he might hold Kerina until the morning. Kerina's last bodyslave had known, but she was mute and never trained to write, only serve. He only hoped that loyalty could replace silence. His prayer had been with quivered lip, blessing child with fear of tragedy.
Following the prayer he stood, helping Kerina to her feet as well, his hands still upon her.
"Kerina...how I long to utter that name in else places besides sealed walls and closed doors...yes, we must go. Lissanna...If you ever develop loyalties other than to whom you serve, remember this. Should Victor ever learn of this betrayal, he will know that you have knowledge of the transgression. I would be beaten to death, and you as well. I care not if I am failed by you, as you have no oath to me, but do not fail yourself, and do not fail your Domina."
Invictus open the door, cold wind gushing in and flickering the candles.
"Domina...Kerina...my the gods hear my words inside this temple. There will be a day, that will be a day of just us. I will find a way that we will be together."
Lissanna
She bit her lip as the Captain spoke his warning. The part of her that had been born not a slave wanted to scream at him, to call him out on questioning her word. The part that had been beaten into slavery knew better.
So she just kept her eyes on the ground, stepping behind the Domina. "The Domina has my loyalty always."
She feared the Captain's words. If he took the Domina away, would she take Lissanna? Or would she be left behind, like all possessions, to be burned and destroyed by a furious husband left for another man?
It does not matter. Slaves do not matter. We serve. We exist only to serve. She clung to that mantra. There was no one else to go to, even if she was willing. Victor might kill her quickly as a reward for being truthful, but still she would die.
And no one else would take an untrained slave for such a position. No, no... the Domina had her loyalty. Always. "Shall we return home, Domina, Captain?"
Kerina
Kerina's eyes lingered on Invictus for a moment as he made his promise. She took his hand, squeezing it, and keeping a look held to him as she nodded, "If it be the will of the gods I would much like such my love." she whispered, drawing his hand to her lips she placed a soft kiss before she released hold and looked to Lissanna. "I will never betray you my dear, if you would never betray me. " Kerina vowed, placing end to line of question.
"Yes. Have meal prepared for Invictus, discretely, while Victor cuts ration I will not see the father of my child starved." she commented, once all was said she nodded and headed on out of the temple.
All it took was warmth of the sun touching her face for the dominant air about her to return, her face turned but to stone once more, even if her heart quaked with desire for the man behind her, and cast a shed of fear along with trust to the girl next to her.
Soon enough the towering walls of the villa were before them, the heavy iron gates groaning open like a mouth to swallow them all back into darkness.
